Croy

Croy is calm, considerate, clever, and curious. He was calm because he never did lash out with any emotional changes; he was never seen crying or mad. He was considerate because he was one of the people on the Smoke watching out for its safety. Croy was clever because he almost got some awesome trading tools from Tally the first time they had met. Croy was curious because he had suspected Tally as a traitor and investigated that suspicion.

This is what I would imagine Croy wearing:

The song "Spoken For" by MercyMe is relevant to Croy because it describes to me how he could have felt when he first left Uglyville to go to the Smoke.

This symbol describes Croy's characteristics.
This is what I imagine Croy looking like in life.

Croy was one of the other uglies who'd come to meet her. He also looked older than sixteen, but it didn't suit him like it did David. Some people needed the operation more than others. (Uglies, pg.190)
Friendship is important to Croy because he is caring, and is always there. He never was rude or mean in any way. When he talked about sensitive subjects, he did so carefully and with respect.

I think that Croy will end up becoming Shay's new boyfriend and sweetheart in the future. He will have become a leader in the community, and a well-respected individual.

Croy is closest to Tally in the book. Tally is the main character in the series. She is very sensitive and is conflicted to something throughout the entire book, Uglies. She tries to be the best that she can, and will do whatever it takes to make peace.

This is what I imagine his house looking like in the Smoke.
Croy is a static character because he never dynamically changes; he is still the same person, same feeling, and no emotional changes.

Imagery

I was amazed as I wandered through the town, smelling the fresh scent of wood fires. I heard a pair of trademasters arguing over what they were trying to trade as I felt the grass beneath my toes. I had thought for a moment: it feels good to be free. As I learned the paths to hoverboard over, I felt the rush of wind going across my face, and I began to notice the mountain off in the distance. Such serene peace and beauty this place beholds, if only I had thought of leaving the big city sooner. I soon heard loud grinding and cranking noises as I drew nearer to the mountain and discovered to my surprise, the source of all the metal the town used for their hoverboarding paths. I could see all the shine that was left on that rail and rubbed my hands across the cross-beams letting the splinters find their home in my palms and fingers. I decided to walk back to town feeling the harsh scrape of the cowhide leather shirt and smelling the fresh rain as it pittered and pattered over my face and the leaves on the trees, hearing a loud rush as of a wave. I turned to look back towards where I was heading and saw many beautiful colors as I had found my self in a natural flower garden. I slept there that night with a soft blanket of petals and watching the stars as they twinkled and winked at me as if to say: "Good night."

Utopia/Dystopia

1. What is a dystopia?
A dystopia is a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding.
2. What makes the book Uglies a dystopian novel?
Uglies is a dystopian novel because there are two "types" of people in the book: 'Pretties' and 'Uglies'. The 'Pretties' get all of the fun entertainment toys and games and this so called 'hot-bod'. The 'Uglies' are oppressed and forced to wait until they are 16 to become a 'Pretty'; during said waiting period, they are living in a school dormitory, eating recycled food, always using recycled clothes, and have only one game: the Morpho Planner. This game is not really a game, it is a tool used by the 'Uglies' to plan out just what their 'hot-bod' will look like when they are put through the surgery at 16 years of age. The term 'Uglies' itself is a sign of oppression.
3. Give me a picture of what your "utopia" might look like.

4. Explain to me in detail what you visualize for your own utopia, NOT just the physical aspects but how your world would exist.
I imagine my world being one of futuristic proportions, one which contains working inventions such as the teleporter, virtual reality, flash-schooling, and the replicator in Star Trek. Flash-schooling is the term i use to describe how kids are schooled; they get a helmet to put on every day for only a minute, and the helmet is an upload source to your brain, therefore creating a place to input knowledge. After the helmet is done uploading, they take off the helmet and depending on whether or not the helmet uploaded some knowledge of survival or acrobatic or science, they are either tested in the virtual reality world, or with an actual test which is an electronic file that is sent to a literal 'desk computer' that is embedded in each desk that has both a touch screen and a pointing device that tracks what you are looking at and moves the mouse arrow accordingly. There is no keyboard to this device, it tracks what you are thinking and when it receives a command customized by the user to begin typing down what they are thinking, and also modifies the text based on commands. The virtual reality is literally what it says in the name: a virtual reality. There is a pod that puts the body in stasis and plugs in the mind into a virtual character (usually represented by an exact replica of yourself) and you can activate different settings or games and in certain programs, you can change physics. Imagine actually being Mario in the Mario games or being Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid; even harder to make into virtual reality would be the Metroid series, due to the fact that you can turn into a 3/4 meter wide sphere and roll around whilst still being able to use bombs from a full size individual about 6 feet tall and weighing 170 pounds. The teleporter is a wristwatch sized device on your arm that can take input on exact coordinates and scramble your molecules to that exact position and reassemble you exactly as you were before with no change in anything except your position. You could also type in a building name and you will appear in a receiver just outside of that building. The replicator can be multiple sizes and in multiple places in each building. It receives commands via voice and creates that exact item.

Comic Strip

This comic strip depicts Tally in the middle of jumping off the roof in New Pretty Town. Off in the distance, Shay is watching. Later, Tally meets Shay. This event is VERY very important to the book. If Tally didn't meet Shay, there would be no big adventure. We would be left without any details of the Smoke. We would never have known who David, Shay, or Special Circumstances were. Tally would have been a Pretty an living with Peris for the fun of life. We probably would not know that there were hover boards. Nonetheless, these are merely most of the major and minor changes to the story, if Tally had never met Shay.

Relate to Another Story

The story Uglies relates to the movie The Lorax. All of the citizens of Thneedville live inside the city limits and the border of the city limits is a giant wall of metal. This city is in a futuristic society where vehicles only have one wheel, and you can buy fresh air in a can, bottle, or other sealed container. The story contains only one outcast, the Onceler. He was forced to live outside the city limits when he had destroyed an entire forest due to greed. One kid hears about the Onceler and goes to meet him. The kid eventually revolts against the city's big-wig, and plants the first real tree in years, right in the center of town.
